The cover letter introduces yourself and your CV or application form to a potential employer. It is the literary equivalent of clean hair, tidy nails and shiny shoes and so it’s important to get the layout and content right whilst being interesting enough to grab their attention and make you stand out from the crowd.

Your Asset Resourcing Consultant is highly experienced in writing these and will be able to assist you.

Here we have included a few tips to bear in mind when preparing your cover letter:

Presentation and Layout

Use good quality white paper and one typeface in black ink to avoid looking gimmicky.

Include your address and contact details as well as the potential employers’ address at the top of the page.

Keep the overall layout clean and simple. Two to three paragraphs should be sufficient and the letter should not exceed one side of an A4 sheet.

Check and double check for spelling and grammatical errors. Get someone else to proof read it for you too – they may see errors you miss.

Content of your Cover letter

Include the job title and any reference numbers at the top of the letter.

When responding to an advert: include where you saw the position advertised with any relevant information (for example: salary/location/full or part-time contract).

Say why you are interested in the job and why you want to work for the employer.

Explain why you are right for the position, briefly detailing any strengths and experience to support this. Take care not to replicate the level of detail in your CV or application form.

Finish off by indicating when you are available for interview.
