Career Crossroads Pit Stop
A career change or starting again after a break can be daunting. Our consultants can assist with any information you need to help with your decision. We can advise on the next steps you need to make to move your career forward.
Where do I want to go?
There are several approaches to this: sometimes you know where you want your next position to take you, whereas sometimes you are not sure and need to approach things in a different way. By identifying what you enjoy and are good at, you may find the right path for you.
To help with this decision, here are some useful areas to consider:
List transferable skills
Sometimes it may be hard to see where your skills lie or what you can take from your old career to the new. Think outside the CV! For example, parenting skills provide excellent grounding in organisation and prioritising tasks in an often time pressured environment. Or you may have a hobby or sport that you excel at which offer skills and disciplines that may not be represented in your previous roles.
Talk to our consultants: they are skilled at drawing out these transferable skills from your past life experience. It may give you the confidence to move forward to the next role.
Look, look and look again
Research is essential when considering a change in your career path. Information empowers change and will ensure that your planned move is considered and successful.
Industry trade journals and the internet are useful sources and will ensure you are up to date with current trends.
Our consultants hold industry specific expertise and will be able to provide guidance and support with this.
Networking and Mentoring
Identify the industry, company or position you want to aim for. Sometimes it’s easier to find a mentor in that position – someone whom you admire that can help you move forward.
Contact them and ask for advice. Suggest meeting up for an hour or so to go through your options. They will most probably be flattered and willing to assist you. If they offer work experience or shadowing seize this as an opportunity to try out the role or industry before you invest time and energy into the move.
If at first you don’t succeed - keep trying!
Our team of consultants will support and guide you as much as you want to help you find the next role for you. We never give up – neither should you!
