JULY 2010

Great speed networking session last night. I was filling in for Adam at this The Business Club - West Herts event and really benefitted from this quarterly fixture on their calendar. A dynamic, fun, business-generating event, it is designed to build connections and start new business relationships - and it works!
During the Speed Networking I had the chance to promote Asset Resourcing to 72 other attendees (business owners and representeatives of local SMEs) on a table-by-table basis and made connections that I'm confident will lead to new business.
There was time for informal networking both before and after the structured session so I was able to further develop relationships we have already established with other local employers. I was glad to hear so many stories of other local companies like us not prepared to give in to the recession and subsequently enjoying the fruits of honest graft and quality service.
Membership of the business club has already been rewarding for us (and by default, our candidates). Although it only launched in September 2008 there are now a good number of active local members, and we have generated a number of new customers, business partners and referral opportunities from it. It may sound a bit corny, but of all the networking events I personally have tried it is the best – good fun, relaxed, friendly and already paying back on the membership fee many times over.

Whilst we have only had one temp fall ill with swine flu so far I thought it prudent to do a little research into what you guys should be doing to prevent further outbreaks in your offices.
It’s just practical steps we can all take to maintain business continuity within our businesses and those of our clients, thus preventing exposing any part of the workforce to increased risk of infection and illness.
Prevention
To reduce the risk of catching or spreading the virus everyone should:
cover their mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing
after using a tissue throw it away quickly and wash hands regularly with soap and water
clean hard surfaces (like door handles and phone handsets, computer keyboards) frequently with a normal cleaning product
If you get the flu
Catching swine flu, or influenza A (H1N1), will feel like seasonal flu and the advice given by the NHS is: stay at home and rest and take medicines like aspirin, ibuprofen or paracetamol (following the instructions).
Also drink plenty of fluids and check your symptoms by going to the NHS flu symptom checker. This can be found on - www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk
If you come into contact with someone diagnosed as having Swine flu.
Seek advice by telephoning your GP or NHS Direct (0845 4647). You then need to telephone your office immediately before coming into the office.

I’m hearing more and more of my candidates tell me they intend to stay put in their current jobs because of concerns about job security even though there are opportunities out there.
Most have no plans to change employers in the foreseeable future fearing they will become victims of last in, first out syndrome if their new employer is subsequently forced into a cost cutting exercise.
If this scenario applies to you then please call us for a confidential career crossroads session with one of our experienced consultants or visit www.assetresourcing.com/assetresourcing-career-crossroads.html

It's clear that the perceived poor state of the labour market is acting like a dam holding back the normal flow of talent. Once job opportunities increase, however, dissatisfied employees will vote with their feet and leave, making it important for employers not to take the loyalty of their people for granted.
Employers need to be careful to avoid complacency. The recession may keep their best people with them for now, but they need to take the time to focus on building employee engagement by providing employees with clarity around career paths and setting work that is meaningful to them.

It’s all in the marketing – if you call the economic slowdown a recession, it sounds bad. Call it a Credit Crunch and it sounds like a new ice cream by Ben & Jerry’s.

NOVEMBER 2009

Interesting times. In fact, fascinating times from an Economic point of view. The newspapers will no doubt continue to be filled with doom and gloom for a while to come yet and there will no doubt be casualties out there with redundancies and companies going in to liquidation.
However, the more I think about it the more I believe this represents a real opportunity for us. We will need to be focussed on what we do and commercial about who we do it with. I believe that there are more positives than negatives for us in the current market and in to 2009. Events are playing to our strengths if we are bold enough to take advantage.
It won’t all be plain sailing and it will take a lot of hard work from all of us, but we should look at this as a real opportunity to excel and to further establish ourselves in our marketplaces. I look forward to the months ahead! Our clients and Candidates alike should do too.
Posted by Michelle @ 21st November
All work and no play at the moment. It’s my Birthday, but no sooner are the presents unwrapped than I’m back in work mode and keen to get my thoughts on the blog.
We need to be our usual sensitive selves right now as many of our Clients will be nervous and some may be quite downbeat. There is plenty to be upbeat about so we must be the positive voice in amongst the grumbling crowds. Most people will prefer to do business with those talking positively rather than being depressing.
So that said, what is our message?
- This is a good opportunity for Clients to review the talent pool.
- It is also a great opportunity to pick up some new talent. The best people are looking around for good opportunities and forward looking employers. Candidates will respond well to Clients who present their “Value Proposition” well i.e. those Clients that use a Professional Recruitment Partner to promote their employer brand (this means us!!)
- Every Client should rightly focus on getting value from all suppliers. In terms of recruitment this means that shouldn’t be paying significant fees just for kids doing telesales and CV Searches with no depth. Recruitment should be about getting people in who will drive the organisation forward through being highly motivated because they really fit well in to their new company. To achieve this they need to work with a professional partner (again, this means us!)
- A focus on value is a focus both costs and profitability. Costs are minimised through getting recruitment right first time. Maximising profitability is about getting the right fit, and having upbeat, motivated people rather than demotivated staff who bring everyone else down….
- And the final point; the economy in recession, but only fractionally. The circumstances surrounding the Banking Crisis are unique and they will unwind themselves eventually. In the meantime, we’ve avoided inflation rising further which could have become a real problem, Interest Rates are lower and will be lower still, and underlying demand for housing still outstrips supply, so we’ll be back to normal relatively quickly. We will all come through this stronger, and conditions, which are probably over-hyped in the real Economy, will improve.
Posted by Ben @ 10th November
Understandably, recent Elite networking events have centred on the current challenging market we find ourselves operating in. Those who’ve been through this before are almost exclusively stronger for it and the reasons why become obvious when you think about it. On the face of it every bit of economic news coming at us is negative. However, we remain extremely upbeat for the following reasons:
- If Unemployment is rising (which it is) then more Candidates are available and Clients can choose more from a range of possible talent rather than having to settle for anything they can get. In this environment, the more skilful, intelligent recruiter has more scope to select and influence and less room is left for the scatter gun approach which relies on luck – finding the only Candidate through sheer weight of numbers.
- Competitors are retracting and talking themselves down. Other recruiters are already “hunkering down” and reverting to type i.e. even more calls and even less depth. The more they panic and struggle, the harder they will find it to win business. You cannot build relationships when you sound depressed, desperate or both.
- Our Value Proposition. We are clear what we do and how we do it. We take a long term approach, focussing on recruiting people who will genuinely drive our Clients forward. Our retention rates are really something to be proud of, and we can talk to our Clients with confidence about reducing their costs and increasing their profitability. The more Clients focus on getting value from their Suppliers and Partners the better we will fair.
- Cash Management. A lack of Cash and not Profits is what governs whether companies fold or not. Michelle and I are extremely close to this and we are on top of our game. We have a strong relationship with the Bank and we are extremely capable of managing growth and cashflow. I am not sure this is always true of Recruitment Companies.

HALLOWEEN
One of my favourite times of the year is Halloween. Not just because it gives you an excuse to scare someone but also because I know that my birthday is only round the corner. My birthday is also just long enough away from Christmas for me to warrant a whole new set of presents just as I’m getting bored of the old new ones, lucky me!
Talking of presents, the New Year is the natural time for resolutions to be made and the gift of a new job, or a new body are normally top of the list. At Asset Resourcing we are already in great shape to give tips for career advancement and are always ready to help you unwrap a new opportunity.
To best take advantage of opportunities out there it is definitely worth setting up our website on your favourites list and keep checking the positions we have available. If you haven’t already registered with us, click on the Upload your CV buttons found throughout the site.

A CANDIDATE’S TALE
Rachel N, Luton: My consultant asked if I’d mind submitting an entry to tell other job hunters about my experience, so here goes: I just wanted to say thank you for securing me my new job; I love it and it was such a simple process. I uploaded my CV through the website and got a call straight back to discuss my situation and the type of thing I was looking for. 2 days later I got the call to tell me a job that was a perfect match had been uploaded to the site by a local employer and next thing, I was sitting in front of the them at my interview. We clicked straight away, I had my official induction that same afternoon and started proper the following Monday. I panicked when I was first made redundant, but looking back it’s the best thing that could have happened – thank you Asset Resourcing.

SO HOW ARE YOU FINDING THE MARKET?
This of course is a commonly asked question to a recruitment consultant and one which is being bandied around even more readily in these strange and turbulent times.
Well at Asset Resourcing we can only answer that relative to our own experiences and it must be said, it’s been a busy few months. However, as with any shift in the economy, the effects aren’t always instantaneous and perhaps the picture will be a little different in the coming months, but only time will tell.
Certainly we have not had endless conversations with clients declaring a recruitment freeze due to the credit crunch, or even a deluge of Hedge Fund Managers applying for receptionist roles.
Putting it in the proverbial nutshell, it’s a smaller market, with companies a little more cautious, but at the moment at least, there are still some good jobs to be had.
If you are still not convinced, have a look at our current vacancies and get in touch if you find something of interest.
Then you could answer the question “how are you finding the market.”

DID YOU KNOW?
I am one of only 200 members UK-wide of Elite Leaders (www.eliteleaders.co.uk) “a peer to peer learning forum for the owners and managing directors of recruitment companies. Its aim is to bring advantage to its members and to help the ambitious take their company to a higher level. It is owned and chaired by some of the sharpest business minds in the sector, people who have achieved great success, and wish to give something back to the recruitment industry.”
The member MD’s are divided into regional groups of approx 10 and meet once a month – the opportunity to air my views falls on the first Wednesday in the grand setting of what was the Chairman of The Pru’s office – complete with en-suite bedroom - when they were headquartered at Holborn Bars – to debate topical issues affecting our respective firms and to listen to an industry heavyweight dissect a particular element of recruitment. Each and every time I come away brimming with new ideas to implement back in the office to the benefit of my candidates and clients alike. Oh how the team look forward to those debriefs ;-)
Yesterday morning Jeff Brooks was the invited speaker and the topic was 'How to get the best for your Company from Managed Service Programmes (MSPs)'.
Jeff started in IT in 1970 and entered recruitment in 1984. He has built three Agencies from scratch, selling two of them in the 1990s and worked as Sales Director of Parity’s Resourcing arm from 2000 to 2006. Jeff is a Board Member and Fellow of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation REC (www.rec.co.uk) (an organisation of which my ten years+ as an agent affords me Individual Membership status myself) and now works as an independent consultant within the industry providing advice and mentoring to owner managers, often as a Non Executive Director, as well as delivering training programmes to recent entrant recruiters. Jeff has also been a Local Councillor since 1992.
Jeff presented on his experience managing several major Managed Service Programmes for companies such as ICI and Lehman Brothers. Jeff has been managing such services since 1995 and covered the issues surrounding contractor migration programmes which are often a part of the Managed Service arrangements. Managed Services, sometimes referred to as Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO), make up over 6% (over £1.5b turnover) of the recruitment market and is a growing factor in the industry. Jeff provided great advice on how to work with these services and get the best out of the arrangement. How do you maintain your supply line when the new service is implemented? How do you protect your margins? How do you continue your previous relationship with the end customer? All of these areas were covered in what was a very informative session from somebody who has, at times, run over £40m of contract staff and permanent placements per annum across all disciplines.

CORPORATE SPEED DATING – I’M SMITTEN
We are fiercely proud of the links we’ve forged with the local community over the past 3 years and last night I had the opportunity to add to these existing relationships AND satisfy my twin passions – talking and new business.
We are a member of TheBestofHarpenden (www.thebestof.co.uk/Harpenden) an award winning team dedicated to providing everything you need to know about Harpenden.
TheBestOf has been awarded 'Innovative Business of the Year' at the 2008 Fast Growth Business Awards, and to be listed 3rd in the current Sunday Times Tech Track 100.
Their in-depth Recommended Business Guide uncovers the real gems of Harpenden and the surrounding area. It's much more than just a listing - each Business Feature includes contact information and real testimonials written by real local people. You can see ours here.
Last night I attended a speed networking event hosted by TheBestOf, held in Harpenden Public Hall and attended by 30 odd like minded business owners. Armed with a stack of promotional flyers and a box of business cards I was permitted 60 seconds to pitch Asset Resourcing to the person opposite me before switching roles to become the “buyer” and hearing how their business could help me / us. At the ringing of a bell I moved one place to my left and repeated this exchange with a new partner. At the evening’s conclusion even I was talked out, but I left with several promises of business next time they were hiring and a shared understanding that we would all do our utmost to promote each others’ businesses to others as and when the opportunity arose.

SHARP DECLINE IN JOB VACANCIES - what this means for our candidates
The Office for National Statistics has indicated a sharp decline in job vacancies over the three months to July 2008, with most sectors decreasing in activity over the quarter (down 47,000 compared to the same period last year). The most affected sectors are distribution, hotels and restaurants (down 17,700) and business services (down 16,200). [source: Office for National Statistics] This is the clearest indicator yet that the slowing economy is talking its toll on the labour market.
This means that in all market sectors, competition has never been greater for our candidates. Research and preparation for interviews is all important to ensure success. See our candidate clinic for preparation and interview tips here and look at the feedback in posted in July from happy candidates who found it useful...

HE LIKES IT TOO!
We were delighted to receive the following comments from one of our regular clients:
J Smith - Operations Director, Trinity Estates Ltd
I was asked to help test the functionality of the new site by registering my next vacancy online. This turned out to be simplicity itself, but the added bonus for me was whilst on the site I was able to have a play around and, curious to learn how an agency thought a candidate should behave in front of the likes of me at interview, I decided to take a look at their tips download. Not only would I concur that it contains loads of sound advice I was also able to steal a couple of killer questions to use myself next time around so you have be warned!

YOU LIKE IT!
Positive feedback on our new online Candidate Clinic has been immense! Having it online seems to make it easier to use and allows the candidates to zero in on what they need. Here's what some of them had to say:
Xin L, Luton
I utilised the candidate clinic extensively in preparation for my interview. The interview questions section was particularly useful and really bolstered my confidence before I went in. I was successful and now have so much confidence for my ability and my future.
C Adams, Luton
I recently secured employment through Asset Resourcing, but I am a mature candidate and was originally worried I was out of touch with what employers look for from an interviewee. You kindly recommended I visit your candidate clinic in the days leading up to my big day. I was easily able to find my way around the site and the information I read was straight forward and gave me great heart.
H Underwood, Luton
The advice about how to hand your notice in was spot on. I get on very well with my manager so I was dreading telling her I was leaving. I followed the main points and now have an exciting new job to go to, the best wishes of my old manager and a fantastic reference!
